| | Filippo Inzaghi, Pippo Inzaghi, Pippo, SuperPippo | | Pippo Inzaghi is perhaps one of the finest strikers in the Italian game, or at least he was in his younger years. He is one of those strikers who seems to pop up and finish the chance off and sealed his place as a Rossoneri legend with two goals in the Champions League final in 2007 as Milan beat Liverpool in a rematch of the 2005 final.
Inzaghi is often criticised for not offering enough to the team but with a goal scoring record of around one goal every three games I don’t think you can complain too much to be honest. His work rate is decent and he has a great ability to anticipate where the ball will land, especially in front of goal. Inzaghi is perhaps the best striker in the game at playing off the shoulder, though he doesn’t always get it right and is often caught offside.
I would argue that Inzaghi’s best period at Milan, and indeed in his career, was when he played alongside Andriy Shevchenko in the Ukrainians first spell at the Rossoneri, before Chelsea’s millions turned his head. In that period Pippo and Shevchenko were perhaps the best striking partnership in Europe and it came as no surprise when the Rossoneri won the Champions League in 2003 and the Scudetto in 2004. It was a golden age at the San Siro and Inzaghi was one of the key members.
The former Parma and Juve man may be 35-years-of-age but he still knows how to find the net. Pippo has popped up with a hat-trick or two over the last couple of seasons as well (bagging all three in March this year when Milan beat Atalanta 3-0 at the San Siro and then getting another against Torino in April). He may not score the most spectacular goals but in all honesty as long as your strikers are scoring it doesn’t matter how they go in!
The World Cup winning striker is contracted at the San Siro until the end of next season so we’ll have at least one more year of watching Pippo terrorise defences in the Serie A. He may be slated by opposition managers but that’s because they know he is the best goal-poacher in the business and his contribution to the Milan team over the years has been fantastic.
